Writing

I saw the call for Susanna Hill's holiday writing contest and could not pass the opportunity to write something silly. The contest rules are to write a story for children, about a holiday hero, with 205 words or less.

I came up with a sneaky holiday hero who saves Christmas. Hope you like it:

Granny's Secret

The tree was burdened with decorations, and lights twinkled through the frosty windows. The house was filled with cheerful noises of guests come near and far to celebrate Christmas Eve dinner together. The cousins Timmy, Tommy and Teddy sat at one end of the table and Granny at the other, with the rest of the family sprinkled in between.
Bellies full, Dad offered the last piece of ham to Timmy, when… CRASH! The ham went flying through the air, as everyone jerked around. The ham landed on Tommy’s face just as a lonely tree ornament rolled in the dining room doorway.

THE CAT!

In the living room, lights sadly snaked between ornaments scattered about, glitter littered everywhere, and the star was lodged in the wall next to the TV. The body of a spruce, formerly knows as The Christmas tree, lay in the middle of it all.

“That CAT!” howled dad. “Christmas is ruined,” sobbed mom. “Where will Santa leave our presents!” wailed Timmy, Tommy and Teddy.

They were silenced by a whistling tune. Suddenly cats streamed in through the doors and windows.  A whisk of a tail, jingle of a bell, and a magical moment later the last speck of glitter floated back into its place. The cats disappeared into the dark night.

The family gaped mouths open as Granny shuffled back to the table. “Let’s have some cookies and milk” she beckoned over her shoulder while sneaking a wink at the cat, “Crazy cat lady. Fiddlesticks!”

That's a really cute story, Mirka! Do your cats hire out for cleaning houses, too? ;)

We're lucky that our cat doesn't touch the tree. But he wouldn't repair it either. =) Good luck!

I'm glad the cats cleaned up their mess. I wonder if they could teach my kids.
